Why Paying Musicians Matters

Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest is such a wonderful gift to our community. This weekend celebrates local musicians in a festival setting where anyone can attend and enjoy the talent for FREE. There is no cost to the general public to check out a new band or watch an old favorite. But what a lot of people may not realize is that all of those musicians are being paid for performing which is a HUGE DEAL!

Supporting your local music scene not only by attending shows but also making sure that the artist is paid is part of the big picture. Exposure is great but let's face it; playing for a huge crowd or for a prestigious event will not pay your bills. The ugly reality of a musician's world is that you're not always compensated. There are times when you show up for a gig and you don't know if you'll get paid when you get off stage. You are asked multiple times a week to play a benefit or to play for a business because they can give you an audience or can maybe spring for pizza. I can't think of another career where someone is expected to work for free, buy their own tools, have no benefits, no retirement plan and work another job to support this career.

That is why it's important that musicians are compensated with actual money. And let's be honest, this subject makes people uncomfortable but it is a conversation we have to have if we're serious about growing our scene and really making Fort Collins a music city. By placing real value on music and the arts, Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest is investing in a vibrant community. Musicians and artists are one of the things that makes Fort Collins such a great place to live.

So when you are out at the festival; enjoying the weekend and finding new favorite bands, I want you to think about our musicians on stage with those huge smiles on their faces. And I want to let you in on a secret. Those big smiles are genuine because not only do those musicians get to play for a huge crowd at a prestigious festival, they know when they get off stage that they are going to be paid (and there's probably some delicious food in the green room... and it's not pizza).

Kutandara Marimba Experience - Full Stage of World Sounds

It's not everyday that you see a 10 piece band on the Old Town Square Stage! This Thursday you can not only see one but you can dance the night away to their African beats. Colorado's own Kutandara Marimba Experience will be bringing their high energy polyrhythmic performance to Fort Collins as part of our Thursday Night Live concert series. Blue Grama

Is this really the last Thursday in June?!? Have we already had a full month of amazing FREE music as part of our Thursday Night Live concert series in Old Town Square?!? Well, if we're going to end the month this week, we should definitely go out with a bang - or some good old fashioned bluegrass!! Blue Grama are all of those things and more. Hailing from right here in Fort Collins, this group captures the essence of summer: carefree, spontaneous, sunny and fun. The group seamlessly blends the sounds of the Appalachians with the Rocky Mountains to break new ground while maintaining elements of the traditional. You'll want to join in the fun this Thursday June 30th from 7 PM - 9 PM with Blue Grama when they ride their party train into Old Town Square. Check out their contagious spirit in the video below and get ready to get down!

Volunteer Scott

Community involvement is fundamental to Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest. Without volunteers, the festival simply could not take place! In fact, many dedicated festival volunteers enjoy helping out so much that they come back year after year. Although we have nearly 400 volunteers each year, we would like to shine the spotlight on two of our dedicated volunteers — Gertie Robertson and Scott Slusher.

Scott Slusher

One of our awesome volunteers is Scott Slusher (pictured above). Scott works for Otter Products and is the lead singer of local band The Swashbuckling Doctors. He has volunteered for the festival the past three years, helping out with setup and artist hospitality. Scott says his passion for local music is what motivates him to volunteer.

“As a singer of a local band myself, I am deeply thankful for the opportunity Bohemian Nights has given us. We have an incredibly talented and creative local music scene that deserves to be heard and showcased,” explains Scott. “Volunteering is a way to express my appreciation and admiration for the festival.”

Gertie Robertson

Gertie Robertson is another one of our stand-out volunteers — she has been volunteering for the festival for the past six years! Although she started out just looking for something to do, she ended up returning to the festival year after year. Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest is a great fit for her, as she says she “likes working with people and trying new things.”

Gertie helps out with pre-festival activities and Kids’ Music Adventure. She has several great memories from her time at Kids’ Music Adventure in particular. She says her favorite memory is when she “watched a child realize that he could make a sound out of an instrument, like the French horn or the euphonium.”

All Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest volunteers definitely have one thing in common — they make the festival possible and help provide a unique gift to their community.

For more information about volunteering or to sign up, click here. There are several different positions and shifts available, so you can choose something that suits your skills, interests and schedule. We hope to see you at the festival this year!

Blues DoGS

The Blues DoGS have been entertaining crowds in Colorado for over 10 years. They mix blues, rock and soul into their own sound that creates an explosive stage show to keep audiences dancing. One thing the band is particularly good at is highlighting the musicianship of each individual; be it one of their vocalists, their horn section, the rhythm section or a soloist - everyone gets their moment to shine on this stage.  We're excited to welcome the Blues DoGS to our Thursday Night Live concert series this week in Old Town Square from 7 PM - 9 PM. Watch their high energy set from the CSU Lagoon Series below and get excited to see them this Thursday June 16th!

Whippoorwill

Nothing goes better with cowboys boots than love songs and sassy ladies, which is what makes Whippoorwill one of the best country duos around. Partners in life and on stage, Alysia Kraft (of the Patti Fiasco) and Staci Foster are the perfect blend of wild country and rock roll. Their stage shows are beautiful with tender moments and sly smiles that draw the audience into an intimate setting. They leave you walking away from a performance with a warm feeling and a laugh. That's why we think you'll love seeing Whippoorwill with Colin Hay on July 6th at our Concerts at the Armory. See these ladies in action below and make sure to get your tickets for this sell out show!

Katie Glassman and Snapshot

It's rare that a new band can capture an old timey sound, but Katie Glassman and Snapshot live in a timeless musical realm where they not only capture that piece of history but they bring it to life.  Crowds are transported back in time and wowed by the musicianship of the group. You can't help but nod your head and tap your foot when the hypnotic fiddle takes the lead. Artists find inspiration from many different things and Old Hours are no exception. Nathaniel Walberer and Anna Carlson moved from opposite sides of the country to come together in Fort Collins to find their songwriting niche in the beauty of our town. Considered newbies to the scene, critics and fans alike are drawn to the beautiful and haunting sounds of the indie folk duo.  You'll definitely want to see the Old Hours in action when they perform as part of our Armory Concert Series on June 10 with Nora Jane Struthers and the Party Line. Check out their video below and get ready to be wowed.

FoCoMx 8 - The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Awww... FoCoMX. What can I say about you that most people don't already know? You truly are the most wonderful time of the year. It's no wonder the local musicians call you FoCoMX-Mas.

No one sleeps for at least the week before - bands are perfecting their set, volunteers are furiously working on last minute details and music lovers from all over are scouring through your program guide to figure out their schedules.

We wait all year to see you, to feel you and to experience you and then the weekend is finally upon us. There is an electric excitement that rolls through the city when you arrive. Of course there has to be when you put so much talent into such a short time span.

250 different local acts performing at 25 local businesses - some established and some new, some full time and some occasional but all coming together to create something special for our community. A gift that we can treasure and support year round; created by local musicians for local musicians that has turned into so much more. Thank you FoCoMX for helping us celebrate how much local music means to us.

FoCoMX is presented by the Fort Collins Musicians Association as a weekend dedicated to celebrating local music in Northern Colorado. This year's festival will take place on Friday April 23 and Saturday April 24th at various locations in Old Town Fort Collins and will feature an all local lineup of music.

Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore - 30 Years of Making Music

Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore have been making sweet music together for over 30 years. The duo are partners in both songwriting and life.

Their love of music coupled with their love of each other have given them a complexity that keep audiences enchanted by their versatile American Roots sound. The chemistry is undeniable as they make themselves at home with any crowd. Their music is honest and their sense of humor is wicked!

We are happy to welcome Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore to our stage as part of the Concerts at the Armory on Tuesday April 12th with Loudon Wainwright III. Check out the duo in action below and get excited for this show!

Matt Skinner - Texas Troubadour Charms Fort Collins

It's not often that a Texas boy can come in and steal the hearts of Coloradoans, but singer songwriter Matt Skinner does just that with his witty charm. (It probably doesn't hurt that his voice is often compared to another Texas show stopper, Willie Nelson.)

He is a true storyteller that captures the listener's attention with smart lyrics and funny antics. He blends country, blues and roots rock seamlessly and wins over every audience with his natural stage presence and easy nature.

We're super excited to welcome Fort Collins's own Matt Skinner to our Concerts at the Armory on Saturday March 19th with Mandolin Orange. Check out his video below and get ready to get down!

Rebecca Folsom - Vocal Power!

It's not often a voice can leave you speechless, but when Colorado's own Rebecca Folsom opens her mouth; she commands your attention. Not only is her 4 octave vocal range enough to wow, but her amazing songwriting paired with a sweet soul captures her audience from her first song to her last.

Rebecca writes from the heart; lovingly crafting each tune with sincere emotion that connects to her crowd. Performing world-wide and touring with an extensive schedule, we are lucky to have her in our local music scene and even luckier to have her perform in Fort Collins!

Rebecca Folsom will be here on March 3rd as part of our Concerts at the Armory with the equally talented Karla Bonoff. Get a sneak peak of her in the studio performing Colorado below and get excited for the show!!

Megan Burtt - A Star in Our Scene

Megan Burtt has been a rising star in the Colorado scene after making a splash at the 2010 Rocky Mountain Folks Fest winning Songwriter of the Year honors. She received her degree from the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, so you better believe she has the pedigree to go with the natural born talent.

Her music is honest and raw, polished and accessible. She's a world traveler and knows how to tell her stories in a way that draw crowds and critics to her sound. Riding high from the acclaim of her studio album The Bargain, which was released in the Fall of 2015, Megan Burtt is a must see!

And now is your chance to see her in action when we welcome her to our Concerts at the Armory on February 26th with Brett Dennen. Watch her performance at Red Rocks last summer with the Colorado Symphony (below) and get excited for this amazing show!!

Moors & McCumber - Match Made in Musical Heaven

James Moors and Kort McCumber are household names in the Colorado music scene. They each have recognition as accomplished singer-songwriters with a solid fan base, but it was when they 2 joined forces ten years ago that they blew the door wide open to much larger audience.

The duo found what was missing in their solo projects, which ended up being each other. Moors & McCumber have established themselves as a musical tour de force on a national scale with fierce lyrics, soaring harmonies and skilled instrumentalists. We are thrilled to welcome them to our Concerts at the Armory with Tall Heights on January 30th.

Check out the video below and get excited for the show!

Adam Thomas Brown - Moseys Into the Spotlight!

Adam Thomas Brown has something special. Steeped deep in Americana Roots, he is able to sing his heartfelt stories with ease. He not only connects with the crowd, but he elicits feelings from audiences.

This Fort Collins musician is known for being the guitarist and frontman for Mosey West but this last year he's really come into his own as a solo artist. We are so excited to welcome Adam Thomas Brown to our stage at Concerts at the Armory with Noah Gundersen on Thursday December 10th. Check out the video below and get excited to see him in action! Tickets available HERE.
